Explore More Sustainable Commute Options This Fall!
As the new semester begins, it’s a great time to explore all the alternate ways you can get to, from, and around JHU—beyond driving alone.
Choosing commute options that are more sustainable, cost-effective, and community-oriented can help you save money, reduce traffic, support a healthier lifestyle, and make a positive impact on our environment and community.
JHU offers a variety of resources to make your commute easier and more sustainable:
- Daytime Buses & Shuttles – frequent routes connecting campuses, neighborhoods, and the new student center.
- Blue Jay Shuttle & East Baltimore Blue Jay Shuttle – on-demand, evening, and nighttime rides for safe travel.
- Public Transit – convenient local and regional bus, light rail, and subway options.
- JHU Public Transit Subsidy – savings on MTA passes for eligible affiliates.
- Live Near Your Work – incentives for buying a home close to campus.
- Commuter Assistance – allows you to have pretax deductions taken from your pay to cover eligible expenses associated with your daily commute to work.
- Bike Racks – secure racks on campus and nearby bike-friendly routes.
- Zipcars – an environmentally friendly car-sharing service. Between September 15 and November 15, 2025, Zipcar is offering a promotion for a free annual membership.
Why does this matter?
Choosing an alternative commute has benefits that go beyond getting from point A to point B:
- Convenience – Multiple options may be closer, faster, or easier than you think.
- Cost savings – Reduce fuel and parking, and lower personal vehicle expenses.
- Environmental impact – Reduce carbon emissions and single-occupancy vehicle use.
- Health & wellness – An active commute, such as walking or biking, improves overall health and reduces stress.
- Community engagement – Shared rides and public transit foster people’s connection to the community.
- Carpool/Vanpool – Share your ride with others and cut your commuting costs.
